Summary of Part One:

In section one Thoreau begins to describe the role of the civilian in Government and also the choices made concerning National issues. Where does the army come into play and what makes up an army. Also how men use voting and how a man's morals of right and wrong become a deciding factor in the decsion they make at the booth. "All voting is a sort of gaming, like checkers or backgammon, with a slight moral tinge to it, a playing with right and wrong, with moral questions; and betting naturally accompanies it."

Summary of Part Two:

The first half of part two mostly talks about unjust punishements and laws used against civilians and the Government's reaction to law breaking. Also how should the common people react to these laws, should they obey them and the Government's postion or break them and try to amend these laws that they disagree with.

Summary of Part Three:

In this last part of Thoreau's work, it talks mostly about how the law should be respected because it is the law and that it's the responsibility of the individual to obey these things that the government sets down. Also that unjust laws should be rejected along with the men who create them. Thoreau despises unjust and unfair laws.
